The three leadership pillar

India has been fortunate to have three exceptional cricket captains since 2007: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. Each has led the team successfully in their unique style.

Jasprit Bumrah, having played under all three, offers insight into their leadership. He developed under Dhoni’s guidance, found passion in his work with Kohli, and enjoys freedom under Sharma. Amid the seriousness, Bumrah maintains his humor, jokingly calling himself his favorite captain.

In a recent chat with The Indian Express, Bumrah reflected on the distinct qualities of each captain. Despite seeming like a veteran, the 30-year-old fast bowler has only played 36 Tests and is yet to reach 100 caps in ODIs and T20Is, partly due to Covid-19 and back issues. This highlights his remarkable skills and quick learning ability.

Bumrah attributes his growth to the unique contributions of each captain. He describes Rohit Sharma as empathetic towards bowlers, despite being a batsman himself. Sharma understands players’ emotions and remains open to feedback.

Bumrah’s international debut came under Dhoni in a 2016 ODI against Australia. He credits Dhoni for providing security and trusting his instincts rather than extensive planning.

Regarding Kohli’s captaincy, Bumrah highlights his emphasis on fitness and continued leadership role, even after stepping down. Rohit now leads in Tests and ODIs, with Suryakumar Yadav taking charge in T20Is.

Bumrah characterizes Kohli as passionate and energetic, praising his efforts to change the team’s fitness narrative. He notes that while captaincy is a position, team leadership involves all eleven players.
